Soon after Indian State unilaterally revoked the quasi-sovereign status of Kashmir in Aug 2019, Basit left with his uncle Fayaz Ahamd to work with him in Rajasthan, India. On 5 February 2020, four nationalistic goons attacked him in Jaipur. Due to the beating, he developed a blood clot and soon slipped into a coma. He passed away on 6 February 2020.

Basit was the sole breadwinner of his family. His father passed away in 2010 and to support the expenses of his family, he had made the decision to leave Kashmir after the valley was put under a military siege.

His blood is on the Indian media, its minions, its masters, and to every person that has contributed to the demonization of Kashmiris in India. Keep in mind that Basit wasn’t just killed for being a Muslim, he was also murdered for being a Kashmiri. He hailed from Kunan, Kupwor, Kashmir. May he rest in peace.’
