Govt. Must Release Jailed Adivasi Protesters, Including Women and Minor from Jail
Chhattisgarh Govt Must Release 16 Jailed Adivasi Protesters, Including Women and Minor from Jail…
Statement, NAPM
National Alliance of People’s Movements condemns the arrests of 16 Adivasi protestors, including 6 women and one minor, in Bijapur on the 19th-20th Dec, 2020 and their continued incarceration. We demand their immediate release and the withdrawal of existing FIRs / charges against them.
The escalating police violence against Adivasis protesting since October against the setting up of new security camps in the area must end. Authorities must stop the increase in militarization of the area and heed the protestors’ concerns of state-sponsored violence, and specifically violence against women in relation to the proposed security camps.
Apart from the 16 arrested, (minor in juvenile home) around 200 of the approximately 4,000 protestors are said to have suffered injuries on the 20th December, in the police crackdown intended to prevent them from reaching the district collectorate to submit their charter of demands.
NAPM joins the local people in demanding the immediate release of all protestors and jailed persons arrested and an end to militarization and state violence.
We also demand penal action against the police officials responsible for violence against the adivasis as per the provisions of SC & ST (PoA), Act, 1989.
